There are different ways to treat dry mouth problem. If dryness is due to medication, it may be possible for your doctor to advise you to switch to another “less drying” medication. If the dryness is due to a specific disease, like diabetes, proper treatment of the disease will decrease the intensity of your oral symptoms.
To relieve dry mouth here are some helpful guidelines:
1. Keep Your Mouth Moist by sipping water frequently - You can carry a water bottle, during the day and keep a glass of water at your bedside at night.
2. Eat foods which require chewing - this will stimulate the flow of saliva, chewing Sugar-Free Gum, Sweetened with Xylitol also helps.
3. Decrease your intake of sugars. Also, watch your intake of carbohydrates, like bread, pasta and cookies, etc. which tend to stick around in the mouth.
4. Avoid or decrease your intake of alcohol - Use alcohol-free Mouthwash, alcohol tends to dry the mouth.
5. Saliva Stimulating Mints or a mouth-gel can be used to lubricate your mouth tissues. They provide relief and moisturize mouth.
6. Use non-foaming toothpaste, foaming toothpaste contains drying SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate)
7. Choose Xylitol-based oral moisturizers, in gums, mints or pure granules. Clinical studies show that xylitol encourages flow of saliva, creates neutral mouth environment(pH 7.0), and can prevent fungal infections.
